Mid-Embedded Engineer -

Offshore OMPA support and supply the highest quality workforce for both the onshore and offshore operations of the renewables, oil & gas, telecommunications and marine industries.

We are looking for a Mid-Embedded Engineer to join our client in the technology industry on a permanent basis! Details are below:

Role: Mid-Embedded Engineer
Start Date: July, 2026
Style: Permanent, onsite
Location: London, UK
Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 + package

You will work hands-on across embedded software, electronics, test rigs, and prototype systems in a fast-moving R&D environment. The role involves developing and maintaining embedded systems and tooling that enable rapid experimentation, reliable iteration, and repeatable system performance.

Working at the intersection of electronics, firmware, optics, and software, you will lead bring-up, debugging, and ongoing maintenance of defined rigs, boards, and prototype subsystems. You will also contribute to broader product integration by helping translate experimental setups into more robust, scalable, and maintainable engineering solutions.

This role requires strong embedded engineering judgement, disciplined debugging skills, and the ability to make progress in situations where requirements are still evolving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and debug embedded software for prototype and product-adjacent systems
  • Own defined embedded workstreams through implementation, bring-up, validation, and documentation
  • Support the design, integration, and maintenance of precision electronic and electromechanical systems
  • Work with microcontrollers, sensors, motors, encoders, drivers, and communication interfaces
  • Improve reliability, repeatability, and maintainability of experimental platforms
  • Create tools, scripts, and test routines that improve engineering efficiency and system visibility
  • Diagnose issues across firmware, electronics, mechanical interfaces, and lab setups
  • Collaborate with electronics, optics, software, and product teams to integrate embedded systems into wider prototypes
  • Work hands-on in the Chiswick-based R&D office and lab environment

About You

You are a practical, curious embedded engineer who enjoys working at the boundary between hardware and software. You are confident debugging real systems, writing reliable firmware, and taking responsibility for clear technical deliverables.

You don’t need to have seen every problem before, but you should be able to reason clearly, test methodically, communicate uncertainty, and make sound engineering decisions independently when required.

You enjoy building systems that must work in the real world — motors that move repeatably, sensors that produce trustworthy data, rigs that remain stable, firmware that behaves predictably, and test tools that help teams move faster.

Required Experience

  • 2–3 years’ industry experience in embedded systems, electronics, robotics, mechatronics, automation, instrumentation, or a related field
  • Degree-level education in electronics, embedded systems, mechatronics, robotics, physics, or similar (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Experience writing, testing, and debugging C/C++ for embedded systems
  • Hands-on experience with microcontroller platforms such as ESP32, STM32, Teensy, Raspberry Pi, or similar
  • Experience bringing up embedded systems and integrating peripherals on real hardware
  • Practical experience with motors, encoders, sensors, or electromechanical systems
  • Understanding of timing, control, precision, and repeatability in embedded systems
  • Familiarity with Linux fundamentals (preferably Debian-based systems)
  • Ability to read schematics and support hardware bring-up using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and multimeters
  • Working knowledge of I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, or similar communication protocols
  • Experience debugging across hardware and embedded software in an R&D or prototyping environment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with electronics design tools such as KiCad, Altium, or EasyEDA
  • Exposure to PCB design, schematic capture, or design-for-bring-up principles
  • Exposure to digital signal processing
  • Exposure to FPGA development or integration
  • Familiarity with high-speed serial interfaces (e.g. PCIe, SAS, or similar)
  • Experience using Python or other high-level languages for automation, testing, or data analysis
  • Exposure to optics, imaging systems, precision instrumentation, or scientific hardware
  • Experience improving reliability and repeatability of lab rigs or prototype systems
  • Experience working in a fast-paced R&D, prototyping, or hardware-focused environment
