Location: London, UK
Salary: £55,000 – £65,000 + package

Responsibilities:
– Design, simulate, and optimise optical systems using Zemax OpticStudio
– Develop lens designs, custom optics, and beam-shaping solutions for production-intent systems
– Define, analyse, and review optical tolerances, including full system tolerance stack-ups
– Assess the impact of temperature, materials, and mechanical expansion on optical performance and alignment
– Translate optical requirements into specifications, tolerance budgets, and acceptance criteria
– Collaborate with mechanical engineers on lens mounting, optomechanical integration, and design-for-assembly considerations
– Connect optical design decisions to manufacturability, cost, supplier capability, and quality requirements
– Work directly with optics suppliers on feasibility, specification limits, tolerance constraints, and cost optimisation
– Correlate simulation results with prototype data and supplier feedback
– Use Python to support optical analysis, modelling, or data processing where appropriate
– Contribute to technical reviews, challenge assumptions, and improve engineering decision quality across the team

Requirements:
– 3–5 years’ industry experience in optical engineering
– Strong experience with Zemax OpticStudio for optical design, simulation, optimisation, and tolerance analysis
– Experience designing lens systems, camera assemblies, optical engines, or similar optical hardware
– Strong understanding of optical tolerancing and tolerance stack-up analysis
– Experience linking optical design decisions to manufacturability, assembly, cost, and quality outcomes
– Understanding of how mechanical mounting, thermal effects, and material properties impact optical performance
– Experience working with optics suppliers on feasibility, specification limits, cost, and production constraints
– Experience supporting production-intent optical systems (lenses, camera modules, or custom optical assemblies)
– Ability to work independently on defined technical work packages
– Strong communication skills across mechanical, systems, and hardware engineering teams
– Clear and structured technical documentation and design review capability

Desirable Experience:

– Experience taking optical systems into production
– Camera module, lens stack, or imaging system development experience
– Experience with beam shaping or custom optical design
– Proficiency in Python for modelling, analysis, or automation of optical workflows
– Experience with densely packed optical systems or constrained mechanical integration
– Familiarity with FMEA, structured risk assessment, or formal design review processes
– Broader production engineering experience beyond optics
– Knowledge of optical safety, quality, or production control requirements
– Experience with holographic or holographic-related optical systems
– Experience driving cost reduction in optical assemblies or components
– Experience defining acceptance criteria and performance specifications for optical systems
– Experience working with suppliers on selection, capability assessment, and manufacturability reviews
